Western Ontario Development Program 2016-2017


What is the WO Development Program?

  • Mandatory evaluation at each event
  • Development Team selected (Level 1-3) by April 1, 2017
  • Training Seminar for all registered participants, their coaches and parents
  • All Level 1-3 participants must enter 2 competitions:
    1. * John McKay Memorial Invitational
    2. * Dennis Silverthorne Memorial Invitational
    3. To enter these events the appropriate application process must be followed for each competition.
  • No Intro Level or Pairs being offered this season
  • Online registration MUST be received by October 1, 2016
  • $45 program registration fee per skater
  • Online registration & payment

1. To enter these events the appropriate application process must be followed.

2. Online competition entry forms and information about the above competitions will be available on the Competitions Page.

  • This program is open to any home club WO skater who has passed the qualifying test in freeskate or dance.
  • The program is directed to Singles skaters who are from 6 years of age to 11 years of age before July 1, 2016 and Dance skaters who are 6 years of age or older before July 1, 2016.

Skaters may NOT compete at the 2017 Sectional Competition in the same
discipline but may compete in Pre-Juvenile events.

What is the Development 'Select' Team?

The Development 'Select' Team is made up of skaters in singles (Levels 1-3), and dance (Level 2-3) who have been selected through an evaluation process that includes competing in two designated competitions and collecting points for their protocol and evaluations.

The Development Team, once selected, may be invited to participate in a special spring seminar and / or competition. Development Team members will be eligible to purchase Team coats once they have made the team.

  • Possibility of four skaters/teams will be selected in all disciplines and categories.
  • If there is a tie, each entry will make the team.
  • There may be one 'wildcard' for each category selected.

Program Goals

  1. To provide enriched competitive experiences for young skaters in WO.
  2. To provide assistance to young skaters, their parents and coaches with learning opportunities to aid in skaters’ competitive development.
  3. To provide feedback and guidance for future development to the skaters.
  4. To provide a seminar for skaters who are registered in the program.

Selection Process

  • Team selection will be made following the two competitions.
  • A point system will be used to calculate the results in determining Team members.
  • All categories with more than one flight will be taken to a final flight.
  • Protocol points will be awarded for final flights only.
  • Evaluations will be given only for the flights and not the finals.
  • Results will be tabulated from protocol placements and evaluation totals.
  • Written report cards will be given at each event with an interview from the evaluator.
  • Qualifications for events are based on age before July 1, 2016.
  • Test qualifications will be as of September 1, 2016.

May have passed Preliminary Free Skate test but not the complete Junior Bronze (STAR 5) Free Skate test.

Must not have reached 9th birthday as of July 1, 2016

STAR 4  Criteria

Music time: 2.0 min (+ / - 10 sec)

May not have passed any part of the Junior Silver (STAR 8) Free Skate test.

Must not have reached 10th birthday as of July 1, 2016

STAR 5 Criteria

Music time: 2 min (+ / - 10 sec)

Must have passed the complete Junior Bronze Free Skate test or higher

Must not have reached 11th birthday as of July 1, 2016

Pre-Juvenile Criteria

Music time: 2.5 min (+ / - 10 sec)

Must have passed the complete Jr Bronze FS test or higher

Must not have reached 12th birthday as of July 1, 2016 (corrected as of Sep 13)

Pre-Juvenile Criteria

Music time: 2.5 min (+ / - 10 sec)

Both partners may have passed complete Preliminary Dances.

Both partners must not have reached 13th birthday as of July 1, 2016

Dances skated will be the same as STARSkate Preliminary event.

Compulsory Dances:
1. Canasta Tango (2 sequences)
2. Baby Blues (2 sequences)

Both partners must have passed the complete Junior Bronze Dance test or higher.

Both partners must not have reached 14th birthday as of July 1, 2016

Dances skated will be the same as Pre-Juvenile event

Compulsory Dances:
1. Fiesta Tango (2 sequences)
2. Willow Waltz (2 sequences)
